golf sancturary

There are - this is unbelievable but apparently true - 17,000 golf courses in the United States. For me, this explains a lot about the…odd quality of the American mind. It’s one thing for inactivity like TV watching to make you dull; golf proves that certain activities can do the same damage. (Salesmen are, of course, exempt from this charge because they are actually selling when they’re out there ruining a good walk.)

But there’s hope for millions of duffers… and millions of birds too.

About 70% of every golf course is not used for playing. That space could become suitable habitat for species native to the area. As the brainy biologist who dreamed up this idea puts it: “Golf courses could act as nature sanctuaries if managed properly.”

From there it’s a small step for all those golfers to take up birdwatching and a better life for both birds and golfers.
